Wednesday, 23 September 2009 |
The European campaign to promote early foreign language learning among pre-school children was launched today in Brussels in the framework of the conference on the topic organised by the Directorate-General for Education and Culture (DG EAC) of the European Commission.
Piccolingo is a new DG EAC initiative, managed by P.A.U. Education, that seeks to raise awareness among parents of children under the age of six in the 27 Member States about the benefits of early language learning.
The campaign organisers will work hand in hand with parents’ associations, cultural bodies, language schools and institutions for social integration to promote local actions that highlight the advantages of learning languages from an early age.
In addition to the benefits to cognitive development, children who are exposed to more than one language from an early age have greater interpersonal communication skills, are more aware of cultural diversity and learn to value their culture from a different perspective.
