During the opening ceremony, Mr Joachim Ott, from the Department of Communication at the European Commission, underlined the importance of creating and enabling a good environment for the development of volunteering actions and said that the European Commission has initiated this process going far beyond  2011.

Mr János Balla, the Hungarian Ambassador in Rome, has focused his speech on the three fundamental aspects of volunteering: willingness, individual choice and not for profit action.

More than 200 people, including members of associations and the public, actively participated with questions and inputs in the discussion during the first day of the Italian Tour Stop, which will conclude on 14 July 2011.

The morning conference ended with the intervention of Mr Nello Musumeci, Secretary of State in the Italian Ministry of Labour and Social Policy. Mr Musumeci stressed the need to bridge the gap between policies, leadership and volunteering. He emphasized the necessity of speaking the same language in order to facilitate better communication between everyone.

"The volunteer must follow constant updating and training in order to be prepared and able to give precise answers to the needs of citizens", he said.

The next stop on the Tour of the European Year of Volunteering 2011 (operated entirely by P.A.U. Education) will be in Copenhagen, between 28 July and 3 August 2011.
