Project details

The European Year of Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations 2012 (EY 2012) is a campaign created by the European Commission (DG Employment) and implemented by P.A.U. Education in 27 EU Member States, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway.
Objective
The European Year of Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations 2012 objective is to raise awareness of the contribution that older people make to society and how this can be supported. It seeks to encourage and mobilise policymakers and relevant stakeholders at all levels to take action with the aim of creating better opportunities for active ageing and strengthening solidarity between generations.
The solution
P.A.U. Education’s solution for the EY2012 consists of a multilingual communication campaign that will be implemented both on an European and national level in all EU Member States.
The Year is about taking action and making change happen so that we can build a more inclusive society for people of all ages. This won’t happen by decree. It requires a sustained collaborative effort in which many have to play their part.
The main challenge of the EY 2012 campaign is to cooperate with various stakeholders (National Ministry representatives, EC representations in the MS, AGE Coalition, local associations and organisations) with the aim of giving the campaign a similar voice in all 27 Member States.
Details
“Get Involved” events with national stakeholders will take place in all countries to launch the year and raise awareness about the campaign and ways of engagement. The Get Involved events are composed of workshops, conferences and exhibitions, among other activities. They are organised in close cooperation with EC representatives and with the National Ministry coordinators, as well as the AGE Platform.
A journalist conference is organised by our project partner ICWE and consist in a collaborative working experience on how to report on this topic in order to raise awareness and change perceptions in the population.
Around the European Day of Solidarity between Generations on April 29, all schools in Europe are invited to open the doors of their classrooms to older generations and to explore how the dialogue between generations can contribute to a better education. With this the campaign focuses is on bringing together pupils and older people to engage in a conversation about what it means to get older and how older and younger people can collaborate for a better life.
We have created special communication tools in all EU languages in the visual identity of the project (video, information leaflets, posters, banners, roll-ups etc.).
Throughout 2012, life stories and testimonials of European citizens of all generations will be showcased and shared on the European Year website. We are particularly interested in presenting how older people can support the young and strengthen the bonds between different generations.
A European Awards event will celebrate the year’s ending and acknowledge outstanding initiatives from across Europe in different categories.
The communication campaign also includes the content management of a multilingual website in all of the EU languages. The website includes detailed information on all commitments and initiatives being undertaken to foster active ageing in Europe, plus news, events and inspiring intergenerational life stories.

“Active ageing is about helping older people to stay in work and share their experience. It is about them continuing to play an active role in society and living as healthy, independent and fulfilling lives as possible. Active ageing is essential to reach our 75% employment target and to lift at least 20 million people out of poverty by 2020. The Year calls for action in different areas - employment, social protection, education and training, health and social services, housing and public infrastructure.”
